Where Malaysian Meta Ads Actually Run (2026)
Which placements Malaysian Facebook and Instagram ads are eligible on, measured on Meta's own field across 222,699 running ads, with the placement mix by vertical and the full dataset as a free CSV.
Updated October 2026 · AdPlay.ai Team
Malaysian advertisers do not all leave the placement default switched on. Across 222,699 Malaysian ads running as at their last check on 25 August 2026, 30 distinct placement combinations are in use, and the most common one covers only 22.1% of them. Facebook eligibility is near universal at 97.1% and Instagram close behind at 96.4%, but 14.3% of ads run on Facebook and Instagram alone, and Audience Network is switched off on roughly a third at 66.9% eligibility. This is Meta's own eligibility field rather than a model label, so it records what an advertiser allowed and not where delivery or spend went.
Almost everything published about Meta placements in Malaysia is either a screenshot of the campaign setup screen or advice to leave Advantage placements alone. Neither tells you what advertisers here actually do. This page counts it on the field Meta itself publishes in the Ad Library, which is the strongest ground any of our studies stands on, and it comes with one honest limit repeated throughout: eligibility is what the advertiser permitted, not where the ad was shown.
What this field is, and the one thing it is not
Meta publishes, for every ad in its public Ad Library, the set of placements that ad is eligible to appear on. That is a rare thing in this dataset: almost everything else we can cut by is a model's reading of the creative, and this is Meta's own record. The limit is in the word eligible. It records what the advertiser permitted when the campaign was built, not where the ad was actually shown, how often, or what any of it cost. An ad eligible on Audience Network may never have received a single Audience Network impression. So nothing on this page is a delivery figure, a reach figure or a spend figure, and it should not be read as one or repeated as one. Coverage is close to total, which is why the shares are trustworthy: 222,699 of 222,921 running Malaysian ads carry a value, 99.9%, and the 222 without one are excluded from every denominator on the page rather than quietly counted as zeroes. That distinction matters more than it sounds: the field defaults to an empty list, and an empty list matches no placement filter, so counting against every running ad instead would have understated every share on this page.
Facebook and Instagram are the floor, not the plan
Facebook eligibility sits at 97.1% and Instagram at 96.4%. Effectively every Malaysian advertiser allows both, and the small remainder is mostly ads deliberately restricted to one surface. Below that pair the picture opens up. Audience Network is enabled on 66.9%, so roughly a third of Malaysian advertisers turn off the placement that puts their creative on third-party apps. Messenger sits at 60.8%. The two newest surfaces are adopted unevenly: Threads at 41.7% and WhatsApp at 25.1%, which is what a placement looks like partway through arriving rather than a preference. The practical read for a Malaysian advertiser is that the interesting decision was never Facebook versus Instagram. It is whether you leave the long tail of automatic placements on, and a large minority of your competitors have decided not to.

Thirty combinations, and no default that dominates
Counted as exact sets rather than as presence, 30 distinct placement combinations are in use across Malaysian running ads. The most common is Audience Network + Facebook + Instagram + Messenger + Threads at 22.1%. That number is the reason this page exists. Before writing it we set a threshold: if any single combination accounted for more than about 85% of Malaysian ads, there would be no page here, only a sentence saying everyone leaves the default on, and the sentence would go on an existing placements guide. At 22.1% the market is plainly making choices. The second-largest combination is the most telling: 14.3% of Malaysian ads are eligible on Facebook and Instagram and nothing else. That is not a default anywhere in Meta's campaign flow. It is an advertiser going into placement settings and switching the rest off, and roughly one ad in seven has had it done to it.

The vertical differences are smaller than the placement differences
Cutting by vertical, the Facebook and Instagram floor barely moves: almost every category sits in the mid-nineties on both. Where verticals separate is on Audience Network, which runs from about 69% in the lowest category to about 77.3% in the highest. Read that spread carefully rather than as a recommendation. Verticals here are model-assigned and multi-label, so an ad can sit in two of them and no column sums to anything. And because this is eligibility rather than delivery, a category that keeps Audience Network on is telling you about its tolerance for cheap incremental placement, not about where its results came from. The honest summary is that placement choice in Malaysia varies far more between individual advertisers than between industries, which is the same shape the mega-sale timing study found on a completely different question.

Frequently asked questions
Which placements do Malaysian Facebook ads run on?
Almost all of them allow Facebook and Instagram, at 97.1% and 96.4% eligibility. Below that it varies: Audience Network 66.9%, Messenger 60.8%, Threads 41.7% and WhatsApp 25.1%, measured across 222,699 Malaysian ads running as at their last check.
Do Malaysian advertisers just leave Advantage placements on?
Many do not. 30 distinct placement combinations are in use and the most common covers only 22.1% of ads, while 14.3% run on Facebook and Instagram alone, which is a setting nobody arrives at by accident.
Does this show where my competitors spend their budget?
No. Meta publishes which placements an ad is eligible for, not where it was delivered or what it cost. An ad eligible on four placements may have received almost all of its impressions on one. Treat every figure here as a permission setting rather than as a media plan.
How many Malaysian ads switch Audience Network off?
Roughly a third. Audience Network eligibility sits at 66.9% of ads carrying a placement value, so the rest have it disabled. It is the single most common thing a Malaysian advertiser turns off.
Why are Threads and WhatsApp so much lower?
They are the newest placements, so a large share of currently running ads was created before those surfaces were available and would need to be reopened and edited to become eligible. Threads sits at 41.7% and WhatsApp at 25.1%, and those numbers describe adoption in progress rather than a settled preference.
Do the percentages add up to 100?
The placement rows do not, because an ad is usually eligible on several at once, so each row is a share of ads permitting that placement. The combination rows do, because each ad falls into exactly one exact set. Both are in the CSV and each row says which kind it is.
Is this data complete?
The placement field itself is close to complete: 99.9% of running Malaysian ads carry a value, and the 222 that do not are excluded from the denominators rather than counted as zero. The archive underneath is a tracked set rather than a census, so the absolute counts are floors while the shares are sound.
Can I reuse these figures?
Yes, under CC BY 4.0 with attribution to AdPlay.ai. Take them from the CSV rather than from the page, since the file carries the denominator and the method note for every row.
